Retailers are facing a new reality: success is about more than selling. It's about building a business that can adapt and grow.

According to the 2025 Mirakl Index Report, retailers leveraging Mirakl to power their marketplaces and dropship programs are not just surviving, but thriving, with a combined gross merchandise value (GMV) of over $9.6 billion and a remarkable year-over-year growth of 34.3% in 2024.

This growth rate is nearly four times faster than the approximately 8% to 9% global eCommerce growth, signaling a significant shift in the digital commerce landscape.

The data behind the revolution

The report, which analyzed the performance of 153 leading marketplace and dropship operators, found that this exponential growth is fueled by a strategic expansion of product assortments and the maturation of a new commerce model.

By leveraging third-party sellers, retailers were able to expand their product offerings by more than 24% without holding inventory, proving that the platform model delivers both scale and efficiency.

The rise of specialty marketplaces

For years, the eCommerce landscape was dominated by generalists.

However, the 2025 Marketplace and Dropship Index findings show a significant shift as specialty marketplaces gain ground.

These retailers are winning by focusing on specific niches and curating their offerings, with marketplaces now accounting for 67% of global eCommerce, a jump from 40% just 10 years prior.

The report highlights how this curated approach is delivering substantial growth across various industries.

Agentic commerce and the marketplace advantage

The report also highlights a marketplace advantage in an era of agentic commerce, where artificial intelligence plays an increasingly important role.

The report explores how the very nature of marketplaces — with their structured data, vast product selections and automated operations — makes them uniquely suited to thrive as AI agents autonomously search, compare and purchase on behalf of consumers and businesses.

Retail media is the marketplace accelerator

This transformation is further accelerated by retail media, which is emerging as a powerful new revenue stream.

The report reveals how marketplaces, by creating a self-reinforcing flywheel, are using AI-powered advertising to drive both growth and monetization.

This synergy is delivering tangible results for marketplace operators, including an 83% increase in ad response rates and a 25% increase in click-through rates.
