South America’s Largest Food Retailer, GPA, Launches Mirakl-Powered Marketplace

GPA Leverages Mirakl’s Turnkey Marketplace Platform with Pre-Built Connector1 to Expand into New Categories as Online Grocery Retail Takes Off
SÃO PAULO (December 16, 2020) – Capitalizing on the pandemic-driven surge in eCommerce sales, online marketplace platform provider Mirakl and GPA, the largest food retailer in South America, announced that GPA partnered with Mirakl and SAP to launch a new eCommerce marketplace powered by Mirakl in Brazil. With the marketplace, GPA is expanding its core online grocery offering at Pão de Açúcar (paodeacucar.com) and Extra (clubeextra.com.br) to include new categories like home goods, toys, baby products, tires, health and beauty care, and more, giving its customers a wider selection from the retailer they trust.
The largest food and general merchandise retailer in Brazil, GPA is a $14 billion business with more than 1,000 brick-and-mortar stores. With the new marketplace, the company will be able to efficiently scale its online assortment and increase its share of wallet by giving shoppers a broader selection of products and categories from vetted third-party sellers, available for shipping right to their door.
GPA’s marketplace launch comes at an extremely opportune time for the leading retailer. Brazil’s online grocery sales grew by 63% in 2019, with 2020 trending towards even sharper growth as consumers shift their day-to-day purchases online. Thanks to Mirakl’s turnkey solution, fast time to market and quick ROI, GPA is ideally positioned to capitalize on this prime growth trend.
“Marketplace will leverage our customers’ recurring grocery experience by granting the largest online food & beverages offering in the market while expanding non-food categories dramatically, aiming to provide a comprehensive one stop-shop experience spanning from vegetables to furniture,“ said Romain Deconninck, GPA’s Marketplace General Manager. “Our driver is to build the best marketplace experience for both sellers and customers to win their preference. We were aware that we needed the best solutions available to secure high operational quality and fast scalability. The Mirakl platform offered the most robust functionality with the shortest time to market and a much-appreciated customer success approach.”
The launch of GPA’s marketplace is made possible in part through a partnership between Mirakl, the only marketplace SaaS platform that empowers both B2B and B2C organizations to launch and grow an enterprise marketplace at scale, and SAP, a global leader in commerce solutions. With Mirakl’spre-built connector, businesses using SAP Commerce Marketplace Management by Mirakl such as GPA are able to quickly launch a full-featured marketplace with streamlined seller onboarding and product catalog management.
Mirakl’s slate of customers in Brazil is quickly expanding: the business has seen 300% year-over-year growth in Brazil, and with the addition of GPA’s marketplace, Mirakl now counts Brazil’s two largest retailers as customers. This launch comes on the heels of Mirakl’s historic $300M Series D round of funding, which is driving a renewed investment in the Brazilian market.
“As one of Brazil’s most recognizable and trusted brands, GPA is perfectly positioned to lead the online grocery revolution in Brazil, and launching a marketplace all but guarantees its continued success,” said Mirakl U.S. CEO and co-founder Adrien Nussenbaum. “This partnership with GPA is further validation of Mirakl’s market-leading solution for enabling the next generation of eCommerce in Brazil, across Latin America, and globally. We’re honored to help these forward-thinking companies bring their marketplace vision to reality, and we look forward to supporting an even greater number of Brazilian retailers in the months and years to come.”
